After a period that saw many countries ease restrictions and reopen borders and businesses in the face of falling case numbers, the world is now facing what is often referred to as the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the World Health Organization, daily new cases hit a new high of 394,501 on October 17, with the seven-day average quickly approaching 350,000. As the above chart shows, global new cases surged in recent weeks after having plateaued for large parts of the summer. Read more.
The Chinese economy continued its recovery in the third quarter of 2020, albeit at a slower pace than many had predicted. According to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the country’s GDP grew by 4.9 percent year-over-year in the three months ended September 30, up from 3.2 percent growth in the second quarter.
