Here’s my chart for today. I’ll talk about it shortly after 3:30 p.m. Eastern (12:30 p.m. Pacific) on the Bloomberg Businessweek radio show. Also, I’ll present my Stock of the Day just after 4:05 p.m. (1:05 p.m.) on the radio and later on social media. You can hear me on Bloomberg Radio or see me at Bloomberg Global News on YouTube. Earlier charts are on my Tumblr page.
U.S. stock volatility gauges have swung from one extreme to the other this year and are still out of whack. The gap between Cboe Global Markets’ option-based indicators for the Nasdaq-100 and S&P 500 indexes closed Friday at 7.61 points, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Last month, the gap peaked at 10.99 points — the widest since 2003 — after surging from a record low in March. The current spread reflects option demand tied to earnings reports and to hedging against potential losses, Michael Purves, chief executive officer at Tallbacken Capital Advisors LLC, wrote in a report Friday.
