This Afternoon, the S&P/ASX 200 Index rose 1.7 per cent to 6449.7 points on Wednesday, leaving the benchmark less than 10 per cent from its February 21 record close marking a technical departure from correction territory.
The sharemarket has gained ground in seven out of the last eight sessions since the start of November, delivering a massive 8.8 per cent rise.
Vaccine prospects continue to lift expectations for energy demand, making the sector best performing industry index.
The major banks supported the index after Commonwealth Bank closed up 2.8 per cent at $74.40 and ANZ added 3.2 per cent to close at $20.83.
Other blue chips also rose with Telstra shares up 3.1 per cent to $2.99 and Transurban Group jumped 4.1 per cent to $15.57.

Social commerce business Crowd Media Holdings (ASX: CM8) has launched a beta version of its conversational commerce “talking head” technology 12 months ahead of schedule.
The trial product is an artificial intelligence (AI) driven chatbot designed to help customers select appropriate products for US-based skincare brand MD Complete as part of an exclusive distribution deal signed in September.
Crowd Media also announced it has entered two new partnerships to fast-track its stated “Horizon 3” strategy, which follows the company’s mission to develop the ‘talking head’ experience to facilitate conversational commerce between a social media influencer and follower.
The first partnership is with New Zealand-based UneeQ Ltd for the creation of “digital ambassadors” to “help power conversational commerce and influencer marketing”.
The second is the formation of a 50:50 joint venture with Israel-based VFR Assets and Holdings to create a platform for “the scalable creation of talking heads for the digital influencer, education and various other sectors”.

Across Asia, China stocks were mixed on Wednesday as profit-taking in healthcare shares and concerns about tighter regulation over big tech firms offset optimism about consumption rebound and progress in developing a coronavirus vaccine.
At the midday break, the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.09% at 3,363.07 points. China’s blue-chip CSI300 index was down 0.12%, with its financial sector sub-index higher by 0.03%, the consumer staples sector up 0.79%, the real estate index up 1.59% and the healthcare sub-index down 2.33%.
Chinese H-shares listed in Hong Kong fell 0.3% to 10,555.17, while the Hang Seng Index was down 0.08% at 26,281.41.
Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd said orders made during its Singles’ Day mega-shopping festival had exceeded $56 billion by Wednesday morning, as consumers sought to cash in on a deluge of discounts.
