Across markets…
This Afternoon, the Australian sharemarket advanced to a three-week high as investors brushed off political turmoil in Washington and charged into iron ore miners and energy stocks as commodities rallied on US stimulus hopes.
The S&P/ASX 200 Index gained 104.9 points, or 1.6 per cent, to 6712 points after a jump in the spot iron ore price to $US168 a tonne sparked a rally in the big mining stocks. It was the biggest percentage gain in nearly two months.
Commodity prices have been boosted by the Democrat victory in the Georgia Senate run-off, easing the way for the potential passage of a stimulus package to boost growth in the world's largest economy.
Copper prices rose to an eight-year high, while the Brent crude oil price neared $US55 a barrel – its highest since February.

When, on the first day of trading in New York for 2021, gold initially climbed US$50 per ounce (A$65/oz) above its previous close, opinion was divided as to the cause of its (and silver’s) burst upwards.
Silver was up US$0.87 (A$1.10) at the Comex open on Monday, also a healthy jump.
Gold decoupling from equities was one opinion. Fear of reinflation another. General concern about the global economy and an equity market crash, another.
Jeremy Grantham, co-founder of Boston-based investment firm GMO and almost always described as a “legendary investor”, began the new year with a warning.
“The long, long bull market since 2009 has finally matured into a fully-fledged epic bubble,” he wrote.
“Featuring extreme overvaluation, explosive price increases, frenzied issuance, and hysterically speculative investor behaviour, I believe this event will be recorded as one of the great bubbles of financial history, right along with the South Sea bubble, 1929, and 2000.”

Across Asia, mainland China stocks advanced further on Thursday, with the blue-chip index hitting a fresh 13-year high, although Hong Kong shares came under pressure as the New York Stock Exchange said it would delist three Chinese telecom companies.
At the midday break, the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.37% at 3,563.85 points, while China’s blue-chip CSI300 index was up 1.01% to 5,472.38, the highest level since January 2008.
The smaller Shenzhen index was up 0.22%, the start-up board ChiNext Composite index was higher by 0.78% and Shanghai’s tech-focused STAR50 index was down 1.73%.
Chinese H-shares listed in Hong Kong fell 1.3% to 10,758.31, while the Hang Seng Index was down 0.43% at 27,571.95.
