Across Markets…
Australian shares jumped 0.9 per cent on Wednesday, the largest daily gain in two months, as a bounce in oil prices boosted energy stocks.
Investors were awaiting the outcome of the US Federal Reserve policy meeting after a week of wild market volatility on fears of a global banking crisis. Financial markets expect the Fed to increase its benchmark rate by 0.25 of a percentage point to the target range of 4.75 per cent to 5 per cent on Wednesday (Thursday 5am AEDT).
Woodside Petroleum leapt 5.2 per cent to $32.80, the biggest increase since October last year. Beach Energy advanced 5.3 percent, putting both stocks at the top of the index.
The major banks rose, but regional lenders had mixed results. Suncorp gained 0.9 per cent. Bendigo Adelaide and Bank of Queensland edged lower.
Latitude dived 7 per cent after revealing a cyber-attack had resulted in far more stolen data than initially reported.
WAM Leaders rose 2.4 per cent. It cancelled its share placement plan and intended placement due to market volatility.

Oil and gas investment company BPH Energy (ASX: BPH) has returned to ASX trading from a three-month suspension after clarifying details around its controversial PEP-11 offshore gas project.
The company, which owns 36.1% of the offshore NSW project’s operator Advent Energy, today released an announcement to the market that clarifies comments made in news articles last December referencing a mineral resource estimate totalling 5.665 trillion cubic feet of gas.
BPH justified this claim by referring to an initial announcement in 2010 and a recent reassessment of PEP11, which indicated a sum of the P50 estimates of all identified prospects and leads within the permit boundary of 5.7 TCF.
BPH also provided clarification of its own investment, noting Advent’s 85% stake in the project means its share of resources totals 4.8 TCF of P50 resources. In turn, BPH’s 36.1% interest in Advent provides the company exposure to 1.73 TCF of P50 gas resources.
