Across markets…
Australian shares are set to open lower in line with weakness in New York as concern about February’s jobs data put investors in a decisively defensive mood. Oil fell below $US81 a barrel.
Weekly applications for US unemployment claims rose last week to their highest since December, a sign of some softening in the labour market, though at least part of the rise was linked to harsh winter weather. The February payrolls report is to be released at 12.30am AEDT on Saturday.
ASX futures were down 59 points or 0.81% to 7261 near 7.25am AEDT.

At 3.25per cent, the Dow had shed 562 points to 32,236. The S&P 500 was at 3915. The prospect of higher rates knocked the wind out of the banking sector in particular.
The local currency was 0.1 per cent lower, it briefly traded above US66¢; the Bloomberg spot dollar index was little changed paring earlier losses.
China’s lithium carbonate equivalent price fell to ¥346,500 on Thursday afternoon (US$49,757) to reach its lowest level in more than a year, according to Shanghai Metals Market data.
In 2022, the price topped ¥500,000, with analysts attributing the recent slide to the removal of electric vehicle subsidies in China since the start of 2023.
Rare earth prices as another battery ingredient have also fallen this year.

Found somewhere in Melbourne (circa 2015) the Aussie-born globe-trotting fintech-shaped Unicorn Airwallex has snuck beautifully into another layer of China’s (greater) payments world, by snapping up a local firm and securing a licence to flog its bag of online payment services.
The payments platform this week revealed it’d secured the license through the 100% takeover of the Chinese online payment services firm Guangzhou Shang Wu Tong Network Technology Co.
It’s the latest win for a local global payments financial technology play which boasts an impressive strategic track record and has the confidence of big-hitting backers like Grok Ventures, Tencent Holdings and Horizons Ventures the capital venture plaything of legendary Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing.
Other headline Airwallex’s investors include San Francisco-based Greenoaks Capital, the Singapore’s Hillhouse Capital Group and Sequoia Capital China.
