The local currency shed 1.6 per cent and dropped below US69.40¢ amid a resurgent US dollar.
The greenback is near its strongest against most major currencies since 2002 and it is poised to strengthen further as the Federal Reserve ratchets US interest rates higher and faster than most other central banks.

European Lithium and its operating partner are moving to define exploration targets and strategy at their Eastern Alps lithium project in Austria.
The joint venture has approved geological consultants GEO Unterweissacher, who have reviewed all relevant data and samples, to send a team to test pegmatite mineralisation at the three satellite projects.
European Lithium (ASX:EUR) and EV Resources (ASX:EVR) will consider the report provided by GEO Unterweissacher and action a drilling program on the strategic satellite projects.
Results and lab samples are expected by the end of July depending on laboratory turnaround times.
Previous reviews have indicated good potential for lithium mineralisation with results of up to 3% lithium oxide.
