Australian shares are poised to start the week sharply higher, catching the wave of optimism that has the S&P 500 near the confirmation of a bull market from its October lows.
ASX futures were up 76 points or 1.06 per cent to 7229 over the weekend.
The local currency rose to more than US66¢. The move comes amid expectations that the Reserve Bank’s board will vote for another interest rate rise on Tuesday.
On bitstamp.net, bitcoin was up 0.2 per cent at $US27,221.
The yield on the US 10-year note lifted 10 basis points to 3.69 per cent in New York.
On Wall Street, the Dow surged 701 points and the S&P 500 closed above 4200 points anew in a broad advance after the US debt ceiling deal passed through Congress and the May jobs report lifted expectations the US economy may be able to dodge a recession.
The focus for local investors this week is data driven with a slew of GDP partials on Monday and first-quarter GDP on Wednesday.
Tuesday’s RBA rate decision will be followed by a speech by governor Phil Lowe on Wednesday, at the Morgan Stanley Australia Summit in Sydney, as well as the participation of deputy governor Michele Bullock on a panel at the Australian Banking Association Annual Conference also in Sydney.

After a 10-year break lithium pioneer Iggy Tan is back as the incoming chairman of Lithium Galaxy (LGX), which is eyeing ownership of the promising Apollo lithium project in the prolific James Bay region of Canada.
The success of the new venture hinges on the approval of shareholders of a listed gaming company shell Mogul Games Group (ASX:MGG), which is planning to transform into the lithium exploration and development company.
To facilitate its relisting, Mogul intends to generate up to A$4.5 million through a public offering.
Tan said that this new company will have a rich pedigree of lithium experience to establish a spodumene-producing mine in Quebec, Canada, as quickly as possible.

Global Lithium industry expert and commentator Joe Lowry is certainly keen to see Tan’s return to the lithium industry.
“I am very happy to see Iggy Tan back in the world of lithium,” he said.
“For the industry to get to the next level required to support the energy transition, we need the kind of creativity he brings.
“The industry will benefit from his innovative thinking. His big personality will keep things interesting.”
