Rising prospects for a robust federal spending package, coupled with a slowdown in virus infection rates, sent U.S. stocks higher for the sixth straight session.
The S&P 500 Index rose 0.4% to an all-time high, spurred fresh signs the Biden administration is committed to passing a sizable aid bill to address unemployment.
An increase in vaccination numbers boosted optimism that the economy will take off later this year. Treasuries started the day lower, but reversed on some speculation recent declines had gone too far with the latest economic data showing some weakness.
Commodities prices pointed to renewed optimism in the global economic recovery. Brent oil advanced above $60 a barrel for the first time in more than a year, while copper climbed for a second day and iron ore prices rebounded.
Bitcoin jumped to a record after Tesla Inc. bought $1.5 billion of the cryptocurrency.
“As people feel safer, investors can expect the economy to experience a rebound that should contribute to revenue and earnings growth as the economy reflates,” John Stoltzfus, chief investment strategist at Oppenheimer, wrote to clients.

Lithium-ion battery company Magnis Energy Technologies (ASX:MNS) has doubled to 32 cents per share since its mid-January low as the firm announced Monday it had raised $34m in a heavily-oversubscribed capital raising.
The funds raised from institutional and sophisticated investors will be used to fast-track its iM3NY lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in the US state of New York.
“Stronger investor appetite for clean energy technologies was evident through the overwhelming demand for this raise,” chairman, Frank Poullas, said.
The plant will be one of the largest lithium-ion cell manufacturers in the United States and is to begin production later this year.
“We have been working hard to achieve this funding for our New York project and to become a significant global producer of lithium-ion batteries,” said Poullas.
