Australian shares are poised to start the week lower, extending Friday’s losses though at a slower pace. Shares slid in New York after the latest US jobs report bolstered the case for higher interest rates.
ASX futures were down 51 points or 0.7 per cent to 7107. The S&P/ASX Index tumbled 2.2 per cent on Friday, following a rout on Wall Street.
The local currency was 0.5 per cent lower; the Bloomberg dollar spot index edged 0.2 per cent higher. Bets that the Federal Reserve has a lot more to do to check inflation, the greenback appears set to strengthen even further.
The yield on the US 10-year note settled 9 basis points higher to 3.13 per cent in New York; it’s now risen 53 basis points in the last month.
On Wall Street, all three major benchmarks fell to end their week, though they closed far below their lows. The US economy added 428,000 jobs last month, better than expected.
