Mitch Hara and Jason Stuart have cultivated a friendship over time.
They’ve worked together on various film projects.
It was only natural that the two actors would join forces and create.
The result is “Smothered,” a TV series that takes a quirky look into a gay couple’s dysfunctional relationship.
The first season is available on Amazon Prime Video.
“We started to write it out,” Stuart says. “Then it all came flowing. We knew there would be improv, and it works for us because we know where each other is going.”
The series tells the story of Randy, played by Hara, and Ralph, played by Stuart. They are a gay couple navigating their way through couples therapy.
Stuart says that although the series is about a gay couple, it doesn’t relate just to gay people.
“The series is about a relationship,” Stuart says. “This couple has been together for years, and they can’t afford to get a divorce. They have their ups and downs, just like everyone does. That’s the part that people will connect with. It’s about the human experience and how we navigate through it.”
As the series unfolds through their uninhibited and often shocking therapy sessions, viewers discover how the couple of 20 years outrageously nitpick and push each other’s buttons.
The series is directed by Terri Hanauer and is part of Amazon Prime’s strategy to amplify the comedy side of LGBTQ voices and stories for a global audience.
“We are thrilled for the opportunity to partner with Amazon as we share our latest project, extending ourselves outside of the gay community, and making all kinds of people laugh – together,” Stuart says.
“‘Smothered’ is also a celebration of diversity,” Hara chimes in. “One that includes little people, transsexuals, Asians, Blacks, whites, Jews, closet cases and a fluid dog. You’re welcome!”
The series features guest stars such as Dalila Ali Rajah, Erik Audé, Clent Bowers, Erika Ervin, Helen Hong, Scott Krinsky, Pancho Moler and Carole Ita White.
“We wanted to include a lot of our friends in the cast,” Hara says. “… They really helped bring it together.”
