Here’s some Friday trivia for you…

Surely you know about Hong Kong being notoriously expensive for real estate.

But did you know that it has been deemed the least affordable housing market in the world 13th year in a row!

A few Australian cities have made the cut as well, with Sydney taking the second spot.

See pic below for more.

Have a nice weekend ahead.

Across Markets…

The Australian sharemarket snapped a six-session winning streak to close lower on Friday, after hotter-than-expected US inflation data finally doused the interest rate hopes which had been driving markets higher for much of the past week.

The S&P/ASX 200 ended 40 points, or 0.6 per cent, down to 7051. The All Ordinaries was also down 0.6 per cent. Despite the fall, the benchmark still closed 1.4 per cent up for the week.

Friday’s fall mirrored overnight action on the S&P 500, which closed down 0.6 per cent, after the latest headline US core consumer prices grew 0.4 per cent against a forecast rise of just 0.3 per cent.

The year-on-year growth rate held at 3.7 per cent, with economists forecasting a drop to 3.6 per cent.

The still-hot CPI figures renewed bets the US Federal Reserve was not done raising rates, sending bond yields up and equity markets down.

In Australia, rate-sensitive companies sold off with real estate and tech the worst performing of the 11 sectors on Friday, to both be down 1.9 per cent.

Healthcare stocks rose 0.9 per cent, buoyed by 1.9 per cent gain in CSL.

Meanwhile, China’s consumer inflation rate for September remained unchanged from a year earlier, leaving the nation teetering on the brink of disinflation. This compares to a 0.1 per cent year-on-year increase back in August.

In company news, shareholders in Australia’s biggest gold miner, Newcrest, overwhelmingly voted in favour of a $26.2 billion merger with US gold mining giant Newmont. Shares edged up 0.8 per cent to $26.00.

Local Equity News

Perth-headquartered clinical-stage biotechnology company PharmAust (ASX: PAA) has achieved a significant milestone with the final dosing of patients participating in the assessment of a treatment for the fatal motor neurone disease (MND/ALS).

The study has concluded that all patients participating in Cohort 4 of the in-depth trial have successfully completed dosing in its Phase 1 MEND study of monepantel (MPL) in patients with motor neurone disease.

PharmAust chief executive officer, Dr Michael Thurn, said data from the Phase 1 MEND study will now be used in an orphan drug designation (ODD) and to open an investigational new drug (IND) application with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to commence a Phase 2 study early next year.

“It’s an exciting milestone to reach knowing that some patients have been receiving treatment with monepantel for over a year now and patients have elected to continue treatment with monepantel under a compassionate use program,” Dr Thurn said.
