S&P 500 Futures: Weak Choppy Trade Sees Late Uptick

Chart courtesy of Stewart Solaka @Chicagostock $ES_F Shakeout into new low by .50, held by its intraday reversal window. Sellers need to hold below window to reverse intraday bull bias and force buyers to liquidate. Holding window keeps intraday shorts on hook.

During Sunday nights Globex session, the S&P 500 futures (ESM19:CME) printed a high of 2876.50, a low of 2836.00, and opened Monday’s regular trading hours at 2847.00.

With the overnight weakness overlapping into the day session, the ES broke to print a new low at 2833.00 just after the 8:30 CT bell.  From there, the futures would turn around to rally up to 2855.75, a 23 handle move in just under an hour.

For the rest of the morning, and well into the afternoon, the futures drifted sideways on some of the lowest volume we have seen in recent weeks.

Going into the final hour, the ES turned weak, and by 2:15 had traded back down to 2832.50. As the close approached, some buyers stepped back in to finish the day strong, and when the 2:45 cash imbalance reveal came out showing $415M to buy, the futures had traded back up to 2841.25. It would then go on to print 2841.00 on the 3:00 cash close, and 2844.00 on the 3:15 futures close, down -18 handles on the day.

In the end, the overall tone of the ES was weak. In terms of the days overall trade, total volume was lower, with 1.6 million futures contracts traded.
