Across Markets…
Australian shares are poised to open higher, bolstered by somewhat calmer trading in metals and expectations that the Reserve Bank will on Tuesday afternoon lift the cash rate by 25 basis points.
All three major US benchmarks rallied to start New York’s trading week after a report showed that US manufacturing activity expanded in January to its fastest pace since 2022.
Consumer staples and industrials paced eight of the S&P 500’s 11 industry sectors higher. The Dow Jones was led by Caterpillar, Walmart and Visa. Walt Disney slid more than 6 per cent after flagging “headwinds” to international visitors at is theme parks.
Palantir is set to report results after the closing bell at 8am AEDT.
The manufacturing purchasing managers’ index registered 52.6 per cent in January, a 4.7-percentage point increase compared to the seasonally adjusted reading of 47.9 per cent in December, the Institute for Supply Management said.
While gold fell 5 per cent, it pared an earlier deeper drop near 10 per cent.
“The conditions do not appear primed for a sustained reversal in gold prices, and we draw some contrasts between today’s circumstance and the context for gold’s weakness in the 1980s and 2013,” Deutsche Bank’s Michael Hsueh said.
“We reiterate our gold $US6000 an ounce target,” he also said.

Redcastle eyes emerging gold system at Morgan’s Castle East
- RC1 on the trail of emerging gold system at Morgan’s Castle East in WA
- Within the Redcastle Project Area in highly prospective Leonora-Laverton region
- Company has also completed grade control drilling at RR ahead of mining studies
Special Report: Redcastle Resources has spotted an early-stage gold system starting to emerge at its Morgan’s Castle East (MCE) deposit, part of its Redcastle Project Area (RPA) in WA.
The project is within a region known as the ‘golden circle’ – an area delineated by multi-million-ounce gold mining operations within the highly prospective Leonora-Laverton portion of the greenstone belt of the eastern Yilgarn.
The aim of the RC program was to improve mineralisation definition at MCE, potentially supporting additional feedstock alongside Queen Alexandra (QA) and Redcastle Reef (RR) which are earmarked for mining operations later this year subject to various approvals.
Assays support a broad, lower-grade system at MCE, with some composites possibly hosting narrower higher-grade zones, now being assessed via 1m split sampling.
Current drill spacing is insufficient to define high-grade continuity, and the planned 2700m program could only be ~85% completed due to ground conditions.
Redcastle Resources (ASX:RC1) says preliminary interpretation suggests the MCE mineralised system dips north and plunges east, similar to Queen Alexandra (QA), about 1.5km to the west-northwest.
The MCE gold system is open to the east and at depth to the north.
Potential closer-spaced drilling on the cards
The company says individual 1m split samples from the 4m composites could potentially return higher gold values, consistent with its previous drilling at MCE and historical RAB drilling.
The plan now is to assess the opportunity to assay 1m split sample intervals from the 4m composites, followed by an evaluation of future drilling to determine the potential to incorporate MCE into the Queen Alexandra (QA) and Redcastle Reef (RR) mine plan. This will be compared to other potential high grade targets in Redcastle’s portfolio.
“At MCE, drilling has confirmed the presence of a broad gold-mineralised system to guide future work,” chairman Ray Shaw said.
“MCE seems similar to QA and RR during 2022-2023, when early-stage drilling was defining gross areal extent and possible structural controls ahead of more targeted follow-up programs.
“Based on this experience, the company will assess taking 1m samples for assays which could support potential closer-spaced drilling.
“The limited RC program at Sligo did not confirm historical localised RAB drilling, but the tenement remains prospective for gold and will be the target of future exploration work.
“In addition, the intersection of a potential groundwater source at Sligo may present an opportunity to support future mining operations at Queen Alexandra and Redcastle Reef, subject to further assessment.”
