S&P 500 Futures: Dog Days Of August

In the world of good and bad news, it’s all been good lately. After making a low at 2850.50 on Globex, the S&P 500 futures traded 2856.75 on Monday mornings 8:30 CT futures open. From there, the futures pulled back a little, then traded up to 285850 at 8:45 am. After making the high the ES made three lower highs and four lower lows down to 2851.50 at 10:00. Once the low was in, the ES made a new high at 2860.00, and then sold off down to 2857.25 as the MiM showed small to buy, printing 2858.00 on the 3:00 close, and settling the day at 2858.75, up +6.50 handles, or +0.23%.

In the end, yesterday’s trade was a good example of what I call the ‘dog days of August’. After an early pullback and rally the ES went totally dead, and stayed that way right into the close. In terms of the days overall tone, the bulls are still running the tape. In terms of the days overall volume, only 807k contracts traded, which is substantially lower than what we have been seeing.
