OUR VIEW

The VIX, The Late Friday Rip and ES 3550

Many times the ES tells a story. The first part of the story is what happens on Globex, the second part of the story comes after the 8:30 CT futures open and the final part of the story is what happens in the final hour. The old story that the algos don’t trade at night was bs years ago and bs today. There is not one CME Group futures contract that isn’t being used by some type of algorithmic or hft program.

The VIX told the story last Friday, it was dropping while the ES and NQ were falling after the open.  After the futures started to rally the VIX continued to weaken and late, when the ES and NQ rallied sharply in the final hour, the ViX closed Down 10%. To me, the price action told the story: down on Globex Thursday night, sold off in the first part of the day and short covered (the second part of the day) and rip in the final hour of the day, part 3. All part of a well laid out script.

Our view, I think the markets go higher but I don’t think this happens without a few bumps in the road. Our lean is two-fold, sell the gap up open or the early rallies and buy the pullbacks.

As always, please use protective buy and sell stops when trading futures and options.
